Mysore is the third-largest city in the state of Karnataka, India, which served as the capital city of Mysore Princely Kingdom (Kingdom of Mysore) for nearly six centuries, from 1399 until 1947. Located at the base of the Chamundi Hills about 146 km (91 mi) southwest of the state capital Bangalore, it is spread across an area of 128.42 km2 (50 sq mi). According to the provisional results of the 2011 national census of India, the population of Mysore is 887,446; of which male and female are 443,813 and 443,633 respectively. The total population of the urban agglomeration (UA) is 983,893, of which 493,692 are males and 490,201 are females. Mysore City Corporation is responsible for the civic administration of the city, which is also the headquarters of the Mysore district and the Mysore division.

Mysore Palace:-

Chamundi Hills, one of the prime attractions of Mysore, is also an acclaimed landmark of the destination. Chamundi Hills is located at an altitude of 1065 meters above sea level, to the south-east of Mysore city. The Chamundeshwari Temple, atop Chamundi Hills, is the temple of the patron Goddess of Wodeyars, Chamundeshwari, an incarnation of Goddess Parvathi. This temple can be dated back to the 11th century. The temple was renovated in the year 1827 by the Kings of Mysore.

It was later opened to the public by Maharaja Chamarajendra Wodeyar owing to its recreational and educational significance. ‘Palace Zoo’ was renamed as ‘Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens’ in the year 1909.

Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary is a small island on the River Cauvery which is home to many indigenous and migratory avian species. Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary, located about 5 km from Srirangapatna and 19 km from Mysore, spreads over 57 hectares of land. Ranganathittu was formed as a result of the construction of a dam across the River Cauvery in the 1600s.

 

 

 

St. Philomena’s Church:-

It was Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar III, who laid the foundation for St. Philomena’s Church in 1933, on the site of a small church built by his father. The construction of St. Philomena’s Church was completed in the year 1941. St. Philomena’s Church, which is built in the Gothic Style, preserves the 3rd century relic of St. Philomena in a catacomb below the main altar. The floor plan of St. Philomena’s Church is based on the Holy Cross. The ‘nave’ of the cross is the Congregation Hall, the two arms are the transepts and the crossing consists of altar and the choir.

 

Chamundeswari Temple:-

The goddess is the family deity of the Mysore Maharajas who added sections to the temple and made it what it is today.
